I am Paula and this is my project
I grew up surrounded by nature, and I have always used the elements I find in it as inspiration and as part of my creations. My professional journey began by exploring the movement of the body in relation to the environment; later, I began to explore three-dimensional forms and their relationship to the space they inhabit.
I have always been fascinated by how the body responds to the characteristics of space: light, shadows and negative spaces. Light and its shadows... the importance of shadows, how they draw in space. This silent conversation between the movement of shadows and the environment has become the key to my creative process, shaping visual pieces in balance with their surroundings and in harmony with the natural rhythm of life.
I studied Contemporary Art in Edinburgh, where I acquired the tools to understand the processes of construction and deconstruction of the artistic concept. It was there that my fascination with lamps and light began: their power to transform a space according to the atmosphere one wishes to generate.
On the other hand, my project is also a connection to my need to recycle in a world that generates so much waste. I live in the contradiction of a society where people only want to buy new objects of the latest generation. Creating a recycled product, which pollutes as little as possible, by reusing objects that people consider as rubbish, became a commitment for me. To generate decorative elements in balance with the spaces in which they cohabit, where the shadows are as important as the light.
Shortly before my graduation my son was born, and I noticed his natural connection with light from his first weeks. His first word was ‘lamppu’ (Finnish for lamp).
My desire to create lamps grew with him. From Scotland to Finland we moved, and the elements of the still life that surrounds the city of Helsinki, together with the amount of waste found in the streets, started to be the raw material for my lamps.
Thus Recylamps was born: as a need to transform discarded matter into light.
